S&C's lawyers are trained to be generalists with a broad perspective and a thorough understanding of law and business. The Firm believes that well-rounded practitioners must be successful in a wide range of legal areas. This cross-disciplinary approach—which combines S&C's assignment system, formal training curriculum, advisor program, performance evaluation process and pro bono initiatives—makes our lawyers better counselors to our clients. During the recent financial crisis, for example, both long-standing and new clients came to S&C for advice on complex and unprecedented challenges. Because of our lawyers’ training and experience, the Firm was able to meet its clients’ needs with agility and creativity, securing S&C, once again, as a leading advisor.

S&C's generalist approach carries through to each of its 12 offices. Lawyers in our California; Washington, D.C.; European; and Asia-Pacific offices are staffed on matters alongside their colleagues in New York, and vice versa. More than 120 lawyers have rotated through S&C’s offices outside of New York during the past five years.

The Firm defines success as helping its clients achieve their objectives—therefore, S&C does not have requirements for billable hours.
