With Sullivan & Cromwell alumnus Paul Mahoney completing his second term as dean of the University of Virginia School of Law this year, and more than 25 UVA Law alumni currently practicing at S&C, the relationship between the two institutions can only be described as extraordinary.

UVA Law alumni at S&C are based in its domestic and international offices (including New York, Washington, D.C., London and Tokyo) and practice in virtually every area offered by the Firm. While maintaining a generalist approach in their work, our UVA alumni work on matters including financial services, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, project finance, securities litigation, criminal defense, congressional investigations, appellate litigation, estates and personal, executive compensation and benefits, bankruptcy and real estate. Six current S&C partners are UVA Law alumni, and UVA Law alumni head the Firm’s Credit and Leveraged Finance and Insurance M&A practices. In addition, more than one-third of UVA Law alumni at S&C have clerked, including at the federal appellate level and on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Many UVA Law alumni are actively involved in S&C’s pro bono practice. Recent matters include assisting with Chief Judge of the State of New York Jonathan Lippman’s Task Force to Expand Access to Civil Legal Services, obtaining citizenship for a Vietnam veteran facing deportation and advising on the creation of an animal shelter in the Bronx.

UVA Law School alumni who join the Firm go on to pursue a range of prestigious opportunities, in addition to becoming partners at S&C. Firm alumni who attended UVA Law currently work in finance, as counsel to Fortune 500 companies and financial institutions, and in private practice. Several UVA Law graduates who practiced at S&C have transitioned into public interest and government roles. You can read more about one of these alumni, David Patton, who is the executive director and attorney-in-chief of the Federal Defenders of New York, on this page under “UVA Alumni After S&C”.

Today, S&C continues to partner with UVA Law both in and out of the classroom. In 2013, the Firm advised the Virginia Law Review Association (VLRA) in its creation of the Virginia Law Review Centennial Fund. S&C partners have been guest lecturers and panelists at UVA Law and frequently visit the law school.

In 2016, we welcomed 12 summer associates from UVA Law School. You can learn more about UVA Law alumni and our presence at the law school on these pages. We hope to see you on campus.
