In May of 2017, S&C opened its Brussels office, headed by Dr. Michael Rosenthal, a member of the Firm’s global Antitrust Group. Michael’s practice focuses on antitrust counseling and merger clearance.

In his almost 20 years of practice, Michael has advised a broad range of clients on all aspects of EU and German competition law. He has worked on a number of the largest global transactions as well as complex cartel investigations and monopolization matters across many different industries, such as technology, natural resources, chemicals, airlines and automotive. “Michael is a demonstrated leader in the European competition field,” said Joseph C. Shenker, chairman of Sullivan & Cromwell. “I am delighted he has decided to join us; his experience and expertise will continue to expand our antitrust and merger clearance practice servicing clients in Europe and throughout the world.”

Michael graduated from Mainz University, Germany and holds a Ph.D. summa cum laude from Mainz University as well as an LL.M. from Columbia Law School and a degree in business law from the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France. He practices in Brussels before the European Commission, and is admitted as a lawyer in Germany and New York.

Lawyers resident in the Brussels office work seamlessly with lawyers from other S&C offices to advise global clients in all areas of EU and German competition law, with a particular focus on representing clients before the European Commission and courts in relation to complex merger reviews as well as cartel and monopolization investigations.
